How to go to Gobustan mud volcanoes?

Azerbaijan is famous with its fabulous mud volcanoes. Half of the mud volcanoes in the world is located in Azerbaijan. As it’s very unique landscape, most of the visitors of the country intent to visit mud volcanoes as well.

Until Summer 2024, everybody was taking their normal tours or taxis to Gobustan area and later was taking off-road cars to mud volcanoes. In Summer 2024, the government of Azerbaijan established “mud volcanoes tourism complex” and now everybody can visit this place easily.

However, not everybody is happy with this complex and many visitors still prefer the old mud volcanoes complexes.

Advantages: Entrance ticket to “Mud volcanoes tourism complex” is 15 Manats per person for foreigners and 5 manats for locals. The ticket includes visit to mud volcanoes, info room and museum. The museum has skeletons of different animals and birds while info room includes stones minerals and from different ages.

The main disadvantage of “Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex” is that, visitors are not allowed to go out of the main road and to touch mud volcanoes and this is what all clients wish to do.

Therefore, many people prefer to go to “real nature” where they can visit and touch bigger mud volcanoes. This also includes around 20 mins off-road drive. However, you should also be ready for this advantage as:

1)      Visiting with children can be a bit challenging

2)      You need to be prepared with comfortable shoes.

3)      Wet wipes are advantage.

4)      Off-road cars are always having ready water bottles for cleanup and washing your hands
